Team activities for young people: MTa PASS, an evaluation

“The participation of our pupils in this programme of work has meant that their communication skills have developed and by using mixed age and ability groups it has strengthened our school community and sense of identity…”

Littlecoates Primary School took part in an evaluation of MTa PASS for North East Lincolnshire Education Authority.

Deborah Clay, a Learning Mentor at the school observed a number of benefits when using MTa PASS with pupils:
“After collecting the MTa Pass equipment from the Education Development Centre in April I have used it successfully with a number of groups throughout Littlecoates Primary. Pupils from Foundation Stage 2 up to Year 6 have all had the opportunity to participate in the experiential learning of MTa PASS.

The equipment is a great stimulus for small group discussion and allows children of different ages to work together independently. The way the activities are set out means that children are able to draw on their own strengths and recognise the strengths of others, whilst also being aware of their own limitations. The participation of our pupils in this programme of work has meant that their communication skills have developed and by using mixed age and ability groups it has strengthened our school community and sense of identity.

This programme also provides children with ‘safe to fail’ tasks, as for many of the activities you are able to achieve the same positive results by applying a varying number of different methods. This encourages perseverance in trying to find new ways to complete tasks. Children are able to display team building skills, negotiation and delegation skills whilst following this programme. There have been a number of benefits observed whilst using this equipment, not least is the amount of fun the children have had and the way they respond to the equipment and the tasks.”
