MTa Optimise

Embed and teach continuous improvement techniques - experientially
MTa Optimise is an immersive, hands-on learning experience that brings continuous improvement to life. In this fast-paced team challenge, participants build and refine a race car across a series of timed pitstops— each one introducing powerful continuous improvement concepts including high performing teams, workplace organisation, SMED, and process redesign.
These methodologies have their roots in manufacturing, but the principles are equally beneficial for healthcare, creative industries, technology companies, universities, and the military – in fact anywhere where there are processes that need to be improved.
The activity is 5 phases, and each phase lasts about 1 hour. Running the first 2 phases is enough for some teams!
MTa Optimise turns theory into action—and energises teams to think lean, work smart, and improve together.

Key concepts introduced phase by phase
MTa Optimise
Build: Preparing to learn
Teams assemble a race car using provided components and instructions. This phase introduces the activity, establishes baseline team performance, and highlights the challenges of planning, communication, and quality under time pressure.
Race 1: High performing teams
Teams prepare for and execute their first timed pitstop. The focus is on teamwork behaviours—like leadership, mutual support, adaptability, and communication—that drive high performance in fast-paced environments.
MTa Optimise 5
MTa Optimise 3
Race 2 – Effective workplace organisation
Participants apply continuous improvement principles to organise their workstations and optimise their processes. This phase explores how tidy, standardised environments and balanced workloads reduce waste and improve efficiency
Race 3 – Designing for efficiency
Teams explore how democratisation of processes, Poke Yoke and SMED principles can lead to big improvements in performance.

Race 4 – External tasks
The final challenge gives participants an opportunity to think about critical path analysis, and introduces the concept of external vs internal tasks. Teams redesign processes to move preparatory tasks outside the critical path, minimising downtime and maximising efficiency.
